So, you know WHY you want to move to Manchester, but if you live abroad, HOW do you do it? In this handy guide, we’ll explain everything you need to consider when moving to Manchester from overseas.

1.) If you are intending to stay more than six months anywhere in the UK, you will need a visa. Depending on your skills and the type of work you are looking for, there are several options for visas. The most common work visa types include “innovator or start-up visa”, skilled-worker via and international sportsperson visas are also popular.

2.) Many people who move to Manchester from abroad are doing so for studying. If your course lasts longer than six months, you will need a Student Visa.  When you are applying for a visa, you will need some important documents including your “Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies number”, proof of finances as well as being able to show that you meet the minimum level of English language proficiency – usually by taking a Secure English Test.

3.) Part of your visa application will require you to demonstrate you have the financial means to complete these studies. As well as enough money to pay for a year of tuition, you’ll also need to demonstrate you have at least £1,023 per month for nine months to cover living expenses.  You’ll also need to pay a healthcare surcharge of £470 for 12 months.

4.) Culturally, Manchester is very diverse and welcoming of people from all over the world. Before moving to the UK, it would also be a good idea to start thinking about preparing for British life.
